Meet La Familia Sana founding Board Member, Chelene Lopez.
Why did you join the La Familia Sana board?
I joined the board of La Familia Sana because I worked with Zeke Guzman to start the organization. I had a strong belief in the creation of La Familia Sana, I saw the disparities in Cloverdale and North County. At the time there were no organizations helping the farmworkers, LatinX community or underserved populations. I stayed on the board even after Zeke turned his attention to other projects.
What are you most proud of? I’m most proud of being mom to my five daughters because they all work and are productive members of the community. All five are bilingual and all of them use their Spanish for work. This makes me proud that they learned the importance to be bilingual and to help those who may not know English.
What advice do you have for High School aged Chelene? My advice to me is to not take things so seriously, you are super smart. Have the confidence to speak up, what you have to say is important. I was super shy and very rarely spoke up in class because I was afraid to say something stupid.
Do you have any pets? I have a dog her name is Bella, we got her from someone that said she was going to a kill shelter, and I couldn’t bear to see that. Her breed is “Terrier Surprise” because her mom is Terrier, but they don’t know the breed of the dad. She is going to be traveling with to Mexico for the first time on an airplane. I have to take her because she is unhappy when I leave her and usually gets in trouble.
